About Schewe Library: Accessibility

Policy Statement
Schewe Library is committed to the full inclusion and participation of people with disabilities in all aspects of the library experience.  Consistent with the Illinois Human Rights Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and other state and federal law, Schewe Library will make reasonable accommodations to ensure compliance with the aforementioned laws.

Building Accessibility

Accessible Parking:
The closest parking lot to Schewe Library is directly behind the Library off Park Street. The lot is small, but you will find a disability-accessible space on the leftmost side of the lot, closest to the building. From there, you can enter the main floor of the Library from the ramp that leads up the Hilltop to the quad.

Navigating Schewe Library and Elevator Access
Schewe Library has three floors. The elevator for Schewe Library is located in the librarian offices on the main floor, but is open to the public to use. The elevator door is 32 inches wide. The elevator itself is 60 inches wide and 43 inches deep. It is located within view of a hallway near the circulation desk.  Any library faculty or staff member will be happy to assist you in locating it, if you have any difficulties.

Stairs are located between the Circulation desk and Schewe 212 (directly to the right of the main floor entrance) and behind the Digital Learning Center.

If you need more detailed information about the layout of Schewe Library, you can view a plan of each floor on our Facilities and Accessibility page.

Restrooms
Restrooms are located on the lower floor near the Khalaf al Habtoor Archives. If you need an all-gender or main floor restroom, you can find one in Kirby Learning Center (building 23 on the linked campus map), two-minutes away from the Library down an accessible, outdoor path.

Sensory-Friendly Space

A sensory-friendly and meditation space is available on the third floor of Schewe Library in Room 304, directly to the right of the elevator.

Laws, Regulations & Policies
Schewe Library recognizes and adheres to the following laws, acts, and policies as they relate to providing accommodations for people with disabilities.  In instances where an accommodation would result in undue hardship for the library or would result in a foundational alteration to an existing program or service, Schewe Library reserves the right to decline an accommodation request.

ADA Compliance Officer
The Library Director, or their designee, is the library's ADA compliance officer. All ADA accommodation requests and ADA grievances should be submitted, in writing, to the Library Director.

Service & Assistance Animals
Schewe Library welcomes service animals. Emotional support animals are allowed with appropriate Illinois College accommodation. Owners are responsible for their animal’s conduct while in the library.  If the owner is not in control of their animal, or the animal is not housebroken, the owner may be asked to remove their animal from the library.  Please refer to Illinois College’s Service and Assistance Animal Policy for further clarification on service, assistance, and emotional support animals.
