EN 121 B Principles of Writing: Library Classes (Dr. Kara Dorris and Elora Agsten- Spring 2021): Week 5: Databases

The Library classes for Dr. Dorris' EN 121 class.

Using Databases

This module will go over how to use databases and find scholarly articles. As a student, Schewe Library provides you with access to these excellent resources.

But first! What even is a database? A scholarly article? Peer review? Review the "Database Basics" guide below (it's in smaller print):

In this class, you will learn how to:

  • Find articles in EBSCO and GALE databases
  • Find articles in a Multi-Database search
  • Find and use permalinks

What is required this week:

  • Read the handouts on this page
  • Watch the videos on this page
  • Add five scholarly article permalinks from Schewe Library databases and a one sentence annotation for each to your Google Doc by Sunday, February 21 at 11:59pm.
    • I'll give you feedback on these during Week 6.

Bonus: Scholarly Conversation

My video for this week discusses how scholars communicate with one another and build off each other's ideas. But what does that look like in real time? Take a look at the article below. Sometimes scholarly conversation is quiet and only done in footnotes of other papers. And other times, it is for the world to read on Twitter.
