Schedule an Appointment

Khalaf Al Habtoor Archives is open by appointment through the Archivist's email or phone. Please make all appointments at least one day in advance so that the Archivist can prepare for your visit. If you're unsure what you need, please contact the archivist to help identify materials of interest. 

The Archives' appointment dates and times are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (excluding holidays).

Digitization Services: 

  • The Archives may digitize a limited amount of material upon request, subject to the condition of the item and copyright laws. Digitization is determined on a case-by-case basis. 

Class Visits

Instruction sessions are customized to the needs or learning outcomes of each class. Topics covered may include:

  • Introduction to archival resources and research
  • Introduction to specific collections/topics (for example: US Civil War, World Wars, Local and Illinois College history, Underground Railroad, etc.)
  • Analyzing archival documents, photographs, and artifacts
  • Ethical issues in collecting materials and making them available for research use
  • Preserving collections of archival materials
  • And other topics.

The Archivist is available for research consultations with students, faculty, and staff who are interested in incorporating archival sources into research, learning, or course assignments. Copies of any assignments or handouts related to archival research should be shared with the archivist.

What to Bring

Pencils, notebooks, laptops, tablets, and cell phones are all welcome in the Archives Reading Room. Please leave jackets, bags, laptop cases, folders, pens, food (including gum and hard candy), and drinks outside of the reading room.

Care and Handling of Material

Guidelines for handling:

  • All material must be used in the Archives and Special Collections Reading Room. Material does not circulate.
  • Researchers should handle material with care. Books are to be placed in cradles. Archival and manuscript material must remain in original order. Placement markers are provided for this purpose. If material appears to be missing or out of order, do not rearrange; please notify the Archivist. 
  • No marks may be added or erased from any material.
  • Note-taking must be performed on the table and not on the documents themselves.
  • Material should remain on the table during use.
  • Researchers should remove only one folder at a time from boxes.
